"Oh, Reverend Shane's preaching to you now, boy."
Generally, Kat is happy and curious, exploring the world around her and picking it apart to see how it works. She has an adventurous streak, as a little fearless, and is tomboy who also loves frills, loving to wear long full dresses and anklets with tiny bells that track her steps. She is content to be alone, making up imaginary friends, keeping herself occupied with puzzles and games, although she can be open and flamboyant in social settings, perhaps a way of covering that she is a tad shy.
She loves to draw and write, but also loves being outside and climbing trees, swimming, digging up rocks, picking wildflowers...she has a talent for sleight-of-hand and wants to learn parkour.
Gentle and caring, she is tough as well, able to take a fall and get right back up and try again, only slowed down by good sense that would caution her before doing something stupid again, making her a bit reckless.
Born in Great Falls, Montana, Kat was the youngest of three, having twin brothers who were five years older than she. Her childhood was pretty much 'normal', free of major cares or drama. While she did relatively well in school, she didn't much feel challenged there, and did the minimum she could to get by, keeping her grades in the 3.0 range. But it was in other, self-taught areas that she thrived. They lived on a small bit of acreage abutting a national preserve, so she had nearly unlimited areas to roam, and a horse to do it on. More often than not, she was out riding, hiking, swimming (in shallow water), and goofing off with her brothers, who taught her, much to their amusement, how to fight and shoot. Winters were spent sledding and building forts for snowball fights. She had a few friends, but was happy on her own.
After graduating high school, she started into Jr. college without a particular goal in mind. She loved writing stories and drawing, but had the good sense to know that you couldn't make a career at that, and was thinking about maybe teaching English, but there was time to decide, since there were all those pesky pre-reqs anyway. But when she was part-way into her second semester, her father (an insurance salesman) was transferred to Baltimore, MD, and she had to decide -- stay and get a job flinging burgers, or go and remain in school. Realizing the importance of an education, she went along with her parents, leaving behind her brothers, one of whom was a married Park Ranger and the other who was a mechanic, and her best friend.
It was when they were newly arrived in the small town of Cockeysville that the volunteer fire department approached her Dad about joining, but it was Kat who took them up on it. Almost immediately, she knew she'd found her niche. She loved the training, loved being active and outside, loved the excitement, and soon she had her EMT certification, then went on to become a paramedic.
Recently, her Dad was transferred back to California, but Kat decided to stay, since she had a job in Baltomore, and had settled into life there.
When the Apocalypse started, she was on vacation in the Atlanta area and immediately headed to one of the hospitals, Grady Menorial and volunteered to help. Soon, she found herself working on an ambulance despite not being accredited in the state -- but it was clearly a disaster so the rules went out the window. By the time she realized that this was not just a short-lived incident, it was too late to head home, but that didn't stop her from trying, especially some of Atlanta's 'finest' moved in, led by Dawn Lerner. It was all right at first, having that sort of security and protection, but then there were slow, subtle changes, enough that Kat started to feel stifled, so she and her 'partner', a firefighter/EMT, took one of the older ambulances, a few supplies, and left, heading north.
That was nearly two years ago, a few groups ago, a journey during which she lost her partner, during which she learned that there was pure evil, but also good, but that maybe it was better to be on you own. And while her goal is to get back to Cockeysville, she's still willing to look for a place where she can settle, relax the security of other survivors of like-mind and feel like part of a community...feel like there's still a reason to fight.
"I hereby declare we have spaghetti Tuesdays every Wednesday"
Decent food was a rare treat and Kat was going to take full advantage of the treasure she had found in a small diner in a strip mall. It had been a chance, coming in here, but then, in what the world had become anything was a chance, even living, so you may as well embrace it and go all in.
She'd been foraging around the home base that she and Talos had established, heading out on her own while he had gone in another direction...they'd didn't split up often, it wasn't too safe, but she was close to home and had promised to back off if there was any sign of trouble, she struck out in search of a place like...
Well, a place like 'Waffle House'. The little diner was relatively unscathed, the doors and windows intact, and although it had been picked over, Kat had been more thorough than whoever had come before, and had found a stash of food in a supply closet, under some old rags. Apparently, someone had planned ahead but the plans had changed...to her good fortune!
Now, she looked at the little spread on the table, set out all proper-like, with real forks and knives, cold Dinty Moore stew and Gold Fish and canned peaches (in syrup) on a china plate, tepid, flat soda in a cup with a straw...and off to the side set a cellophane-wrapped brownie with walnuts and her pistol.
Yeah, this was going to be good, and she almost couldn't break away from just staring at the feast so she could actually eat.
But finally she sat down and dipped into the stew, dropped a few 'fish' onto that, then put it in her mouth, shuddering and forcing herself to slowly savor the salty, beefy goodness that tickled her tongue...
