October 3, 2004 - Countryside Somewhere in Virginia
He hid himself in the bushes by the highway and watched. Leaving his Harley in the woods camouflaged with broken limbs and made his way through the woods until he made it to the highway and across from where he hid.
On the other side of the road stood a family owned country store dash pharmacy with the lettering on the big picture window that read "Bowen's Grocery and Drug Store." It appeared pristine and untouched. The windows were not smashed and the parking area out front and was clean. It was as though it had a force field around it protecting it from the reality of the times.
The way it looked Mikey figured it had to full of supplies and maybe even drugs like antibiotics and such. Things he could use to trade for things he needed, like ammunition or foods. But before he would even try for it he watched to make sure it was safe.
On the side of the building was a drive-up window with a driveway that curved around the back of the building and led to a dirt road. Behind the store was a cornfield with brown, dried stalks that make harsh, scrunching sounds when the breeze blew through them.
He didn't see any movement inside or hear any noises so Mikey cautiously crept across the two lane asphalt, his kukri drawn from its sheath and ready to use as he approached the tall, heavy glass front door. It was locked, no surprise, so he used his kukri to jimmy the lock and stepped inside. A bell above the door jingled so he grabbed it and pulled it down, muffling the happy little sound with his palm. If someone was inside they would be notified by the happy little sound. But there was no sound inside so he carefully closed the door behind him.
Towards the back of the store was a large sign that hung from the ceiling that read PHARMACY. A tall counter blocked the view of the pharmacy area from the rest of the store. He decided to check that after he was finished with the store itself.
Moving up and down the aisles he picked up a Snickers candy bar and opened it, taking a bite. It'd been awhile since he had eaten one and he enjoyed it. Taking his backpack he began scooping various candy bars as well as cans of Vienna sausages, sardines and Spam along with small packs of saltine crackers.
On the front counter were several individually packages of pickled hard boiled eggs and large dill pickles. Moving over to the counter he pulled them off the hanging racks and also stuffed them into his backpack. Behind the counter on a shelf were bottle of Advil and Tylenol. He could use some of them along with some Pepto Bismol, Tums and butterscotch lifesavers.
